Windows 7, Zimbra, AVG Antivirus fix
I originally posted this in another thread, but that thread was entitled "AVG 8", so some people using the newer AVG 9 may not have bothered checking the thread.
The problem: You have an email (even if it's in your junk box) that AVG has identified as containing a virus. For your own protection, AVG shuts down the mail service. This happens even if you tell AVG to "ignore" or "heal" the virus.
The solution: Add the Zimbra directory as an excepted directory. Naturally, you should be aware that AVG is no longer scanning any activity originating in that directory with its Resident Scanner. I actually haven't confirmed that incoming email is being scanned by the e-mail scanning component, so if anyone wants to confirm sometime, that'd be great.
1. Show hidden files and folders. By default, on Win 7, Zimbra installs to C:/Users/username/AppData/Local/Zimbra . The subdirectory "AppData" is hidden.
a) Go to Control Panel
b) Switch to View by: small icons
c) Locate and double-click "Folder Options"
d) Click the "View" tab
e) locate and toggle the option "Show hidden files, folders, and drives"
f) Click "Apply" then click "OK"
2. Fire up AVG and add the exception
a) Open the AVG interface
b) Under "Tools" menu, select "Advanced settings"
c) from options on the left, expand (if not already expanded) Resident Shield, and click "Directory Excludes"
d) Click "Add Path" on the right, and navigate to your install path. Assuming default, it's the one mentioned in step 1 above.
e) Click "OK"
3. Start the Zimbra mail service again. Just launching Zimbra Desktop will NOT work, because the required service is not running.
a) Open Control Panel
b) Assuming you are still in "View by: Small Icons", locate and click "Administrative Tools"
c) in the window that appears, double-click the shortcut for "Services". (not "Component Services", but just simply "Services")
d) scroll down and locate "Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop Service" which should have its status column blank, and its Startup Type "automatic"
e) right-click the service and select "Start" to force the start. (or highlight the line with Zimbra, then select "Start the service" from the left)
4. Launch Zimbra desktop from your usual location (Task Bar, Start Menu, Desktop Shortcut, whatever)
If all went well, this time it will launch instead of trying to connect for a while and eventually timing out.
