Default unable to connect to IMAP server

In setting up a IMAP account in both Linux and windows, the setup fails with "unable to connect to "xxxx.xxx:143" ...."

I have tried putting the IP address rather than DNS name in the incoming server field, no luck.

I am able to telnet to port 143 on the IMAP server, successfully, from any client (windows or linux). Thunderbird is the usual client around here, and has no problem connecting to the server in question. Please advise on any debugging I can try in account setup.

thanks

zdesktop 1.0.2

while tailing the zdesktop.log, I think I am seeing that zdesktop is trying to STARTTLS. The server in question is only doing plain AUTH. The checkbox for encrypted connection is not checked during setup.
