Unhappy Zimbra desktop fails on XP Pro SP3, then reinstall fails

Was running ZD on my ThinkPad with XP Pro Service Pack 3 until today, when it failed with a 'cannot connect' error message. So, I uninstalled it, redownloaded, and reinstalled zdesktop_0_91_build_1344_win32.exe only to get:
Failed to inject zimlets. Some features may be missing.
It then crashed, with this message:
szAppName : zdesktop.exe szAppVer : 0.0.0.0 szModName : ntdll.dll
szModVer : 5.1.2600.5512 offset : 0000100b
Launching ZImbra Desktop results in (before and after the uninstaal/reinstall)
Couldn't access Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop server. If issue persists after reinstall, please check logs for errors and report to Zimbra Desktop - Zimbra - Forums.
Derby.log states:
----------------------------------------------------------------
2008-11-22 06:08:54.408 GMT:
Booting Derby version The Apache Software Foundation - Apache Derby - 10.3.3.0 - (652961): instance c013800d-011d-c2d0-a807-000003c438b0
on database directory C:\zimbra\zdesktop\derby

Database Class Loader started - derby.database.classpath=''

Shutting down instance c013800d-011d-c2d0-a807-000003c438b0

Whereas Redo.log contains

ZM_REDO &$5f2843a6-1cac-464b-9958-4f00dfdd3d62

Wazzup?

Default rein

I'm having a similar problem with the same error messages.

Running XP SP3. Have been running Zimbra desktop V0.84 build 1119 for AGES for administering 24 GMAIL accounts for businesses of our parent company.

Thought I'd do an update to 0.92 build 1433...mistake!

I saw in another thread to do a fresh install and have to reenter all my settings? Argh!

I guess I only have to try it and if it fails to start then I don't have to waste any more time. Though I have been very happy with this product. So it would be disappointing to have to revert to Outlook or simply go back to accessing Webmail.

Default reinstall the same version

Before taking such a drastic step of wiping out all my settings with a fresh install, try the unobvious - I reinstalled 1433 over the top of itself and it has started working. Clearly something didn't install correctly the first time and needed me to threaten going to another product. Go figure!

SIGH of relief!! Zimbra stays as our product of choice - not that there are any serious alternatives!

Reinstall over existing install did not work for me.

Default subsequent trials?

Did you

a. ensure the "Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop Service" is running and set to automatic start? If you don't know where that is, from a start-run, type services.msc <return>. Will be near the bottom on an alphabetical sort.

One thing I should point out... I did ensure this was running before trying the reinstall... and it did do an uninstall from within the install shield.

b. Try the clean install (as a last resort)?

c. ... actually, one other option is to go for the latest version. I noticed the version you quoted has been superseded.

What else have you tried since? (Why don't the forum moderators attend to these posts?)

Yes, it was. Also found it with Process Manager from Sysinternals.

It was the most current version when I gave up.

I just upgraded the ZD on my XP. The upgrade uninstalled the previous version, then forgot where it put its extracted files (where's my .rnd?), for which he complained one by one (after like 40 times clicking cancel I killed setup with task manager). Then it installed smoothly, wiping also all my personal data.

So my dear, upgrade won't help you either.
