Welcome to the forums,

Options include:
-Backing up drive:\zimbra\zdesktop
-Backing up just user data directories like derby, store, index, redolog, etc.
-It's also a good idea to keep the installer handy in your backup.
-Using the alpha backup solution: Setup > Account > Manage Data > Export
-Visiting http:// localhost:7633/home/user@domain.com/?fmt=tgz

(or 'zip' if you don't want to include metadata - though you'd have to import via other methods if you choose zip - see ZCS-to-ZCS Migrations » Zimbra :: Blog)

I should stress the alpha nature of the export/tar function, minor mail store corruptions like a missing blob, size mismatch, or 0 byte db entries can cause a tar operation to halt prematurely/you’ll notice missing data. A few issues with the tar formatter have been corrected for 5.0.10 / available in the next release of Zimbra Desktop.

Is it necessary to shutdown the service before backing up? Or can I get a fully-usable backup on a "live" copy of ZD? Reason: suppose I'm running a network backup system like Retrospect.

(Not sure if the quoted bit above may have changed, or differs depending on platform, but that's not my main question here.)

Thanks in advance.
