Solved. Although the AVG 7.5 scanner was not running, the resident scanner was still scanning various extensions, including *.msg, for trojans and viruses. Once disabled, the problem was resolved.

Ensure your antivrus software is completely disabled when encountering the aforementioned issue.

I hate AV anyway. Probably going to completely uninstall mine. AVG 7.5 or 8 have never prevented an infection on my systems.

That was in "error.log" - not on screen.
