    Default ZD future EOL

From the 7.2.0 release notes, Future Changes to ZCS:
Zimbra Desktop will EOL in a future release of Zimbra but ZD 7.2 will be
supported with Zimbra 8. The technology choices to provide offline access
to Zimbra have expanded since the release of Zimbra Desktop 1.0.
So on a linux desktop do these "technology choices" mean Thunderbird ?

We should consider setting up a website to fork ZD 7.2, for desktop and mobile (and inbetween) devices.

I'll establish one, and post a link here.

Yes, I also read that and was asking my self what was going on. I expect an official announcment from Zimbra about this. It's too serious to just put 4 lines in a pdf release notes.

Zimbra Team: please be serious on this and do a real announcment on this story .

    $$$

It's pretty clear that vmware will be putting efforts in ZCS Network.

Just a bunch of fixed bugs and MIME.. only in ZCS Network.

What announce? ZDesktop will be community supported!

Default Zimbra is exploring alternative architectures to ZD

    Hi Folks,

I think there is a little misunderstanding. We are not abandoning an offline/cached experience for desktop devices. For Zimbra 9 we are exploring new architectures like native platform clients and offline HTML5 as examples compared to the current architecture of ZD.

We're just moving in a different technology direction. That's all. I hope this clarifies our intent.

    Thanks!

Thanks Jon for clarifying, much appreciated. An announcement on ZD, and future alternatives, would be welcome. Without it, and before your announcement, mins in our organisation had already begun searching fur alternatives (a) because we want a consistent software provider which shares long time strategy with us,
    (b) because we need a multi- platform solution, which shares the same UI across performs, and with web interface.

However, from the wording regarding EOL for ZD in the 7.2 release notes, users investing in/relying upon Zimbra technology could hardly be blamed for being concerned.

Imho, Zimbra really fails its customer base in communications, basically announcements in the announcement section for major changes/directions would be desirable, rather than paying users having to search the forum, blog, release notes, for clues on major aspects of Zimbra's future (sometimes seemingly contradictory).

Thanks for posting, that is SO *not* the way I read the release notes ...
