ZD Backup Beware

My platform:

ZD 7.1.2 (build 10978)
Ubuntu 11.10 32 bit

When attempting to run the ZD backup under Preferences--> Backups --> Backup Accounts Now button, a notification pops-up on the top that says "Backup of accounts have begun". The "Backup Accounts Now" button is a single action button that backups all of your ZD accounts. THEN there's the individual "Backup Now" action for each ZD email account.

The Backup Accounts Now button, may say "Backup of accounts have begun" (caveat emptor) but ZD is actually not creating any new .tgz backup filexs in the zd_backup folder I thought it was due to the retention (I had mine set to retain 5 backup files) but I deleted old backups and tried Backup Accounts Now but backup is still not working.

When I clicked on "Backup Now" for each individual email account, thats when ZD gave me a clue. Here's the error message i'm getting:

Can someone help here? I would basically just be happy with backing up my ZD from command line if someone could post back on how to do it. Then I'll just re-install ZD, restore from backup, then I'll be good to go.

Yet again, i'm updating my own post for future debugging reference for anyone out there who is having the same issues (ZD Backups under Preferences-->Backups does not work anymore). I now realize what might have gone wrong with my backup. My last good backup was some time in mid December 2011. And around that time, I was running the same ZD 7.1.2 (build 10978) 32 bit on Ubuntu 11.04 32 bit. THEN, one day on a good Friday I decided to let Ubuntu "upgrade" the o/s to Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric.

The upgrade went fine as far as keeping all my Documents, VirtualBox configs and VirtualBox machines ( I have a Windows 7 VB Home Premium and 2 SuSe Linux VB's) intact as well as, more importantly, my Zimbra Desktop (or so I thought). After the upgrade, I fired up ZD and it opened up with no isssues at all. All my 3 email accounts were still intact and I was able to send and receive emails from each account. Only yesterday that I discovered that the ONLY thing the Ubuntu upgrade broke was the ZD Desktop (hey, had to blame it on somebody right ).

To this day, i'm still unable to figure out how to Backup my ZD. I know there is really no way to hack/restore my existing ZD in $HOME/zdesktop into a new one so this leave me (and all ZD users like me) no choice but to rely on the ZD Backup feature which is not working for me at the moment.

I tried re-installing ZD by downloading it again, renaming my $HOME/zdesktop to $HOME/zdesktop-bkup and renaming /opt/zimbra to /opt/zimbra-bkup, then running the installation script again. It installed fine as expected and it opened up ZD fine but when I tried the Backup feature from Preferences again, I got the same error I posted on top of this thread.

So I would appreciate it if someone could shed some light on this. Thank you in advance.

I know you're running on Ubuntu, but for Windows users out there, I just tried to backup / restore feature in Zimbra Desktop and it worked fine for a gmail account.

I'm running windows 7 64 bit, but this feature should be working properly for other windows versions as well.

Windows or Ubuntu 32 bit or 64 bit does not matter, the ZD backup works on either o/s or atleast it used to before I upgraded from Ubuntu 11.04 to 11.10. Dont get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with ZD on Ubuntu 11.04...until...you upgrade to 11.10. Now, I think there might be an issue with ZD on Ubuntu 11.10 because I tried starting from scratch -- by downloading ZD for Linux 32 bit and installing it on 11.10 and i'm still getting the same error message posted at the beginning of this thread.

Is there anyone else out there running ZD 7.1.2 build 10978 on Ubuntu 11.10 and is your ZD Backup working?

Any ZD on Linux guru's in the house? Please let me know if i'm doing something wrong here? I reinstalled ZD from scratch but i'm still getting the same error posted above.

I'm posting yet again to my own thread.

I just discovered the Import/Export feature in ZD that does a pretty good job of unloading (much like the ZD Backup) all mailboxes, all address books (contacts), all tasks, all calendars, all briefcase. Like the ZD Backups, ZD Export saves a single .tgz compressed file for easy importing later.

I tested the Import/Export feature using ZD 7.1.2 build 10978, the installer file I downloaded and used in this test was the desktop_7_1_2_ga_b10978_linux_i686.tar file. My o/s is Ubuntu 11.10 linux 32-bit.

I Exported all my mailbox and address book. Didnt care for my calendar, tasks, and briefcase at all. The exported .tgz export file was 525MB!

#1. I renamed my /home/userhomedir/zdesktop to /home/userhomedir/zdesktop-bkup-mm-dd-yyyy to backup just in case.

#2. I renamed my /home/zd_backup/zdesktop to /home/zd_backup-mm-dd-yyyy to backup just in case.

#3. I renamed the zimbra install dir /opt/zimbra to /opt/zimbra-bkup-mm-dd-yyyy so I know i'm starting clean and from scratch.

#4. I run the application installation script "install.pl"

#5. I run the user installation script "user-install.pl"

#6. I opened ZD for the first time and added a new POP account.

#7. I clicked on Preferences-->expand email account you just created--> Import / Export --> Import. Browse to the .tgz import file and click import. Took ZD 2 mins to import the whole file but it did without any issues at all!

Backup issues resolved for now...this Export/Import will do until the ZD Backup is fixed.

UPDATE:

The export/import utility does not save the following unlike the Backup feature:

1. Mailed contacts (ouch!)
2. Filters (all my filters are gone!)

Am I the only one running Zimbra Desktop on Ubuntu 11.10 and the only one experiencing the backup issue described in this thread?

Update:

I just completed an upgrade to 7.1.4 GA build 11299 (see my sig) and it looks like the "Backup Accounts Now" feature under Preferences is still broken on Ubuntu 11.10 32-bit. Whenever I click the "Backup Accounts Now" button, a message at the top of ZD shows "Backup of accounts have begun" but in truth there is no new .tgz backup file being created in the $HOME/username/zd_backup folder where ZD stores the backup files.

Is there anyone else out there who is using ZD 7.1.4 GA Build 11299 on Ubuntu 11.10 32 bit whose "Backup Accounts Now" actually works? I would love to hear from you please.
