They are stored locally under the ZD directory structure (and none of them are 'hidden').

I'll say it again, none of the mail is in hidden directory nor are they encrypted.
I'd suggest you read the FAQ and installation instructions (in the wiki) for your version of ZD to see where the mail is stored.
