Emoticons Zimlet

I've been trying to find a way to do emoticons in Zimbra Desktop.
This post talked about the introduction into ZCS.
But according to bug 42576 these weren't working in ZD2, so they were removed.

I've tried downloading the com_zimbra_ymemoticons.zip as a zimlet, but it doesn't integrate properly into the editor (no dropdown appears)

Any hints appreciated as to:

• How to adapt the zimlet to work with Zimbra Desktop
• Any other alternative ways to get smilies into Zimbra Desktop
• Whether this is likely to get reinstated (or I should file an RFE)
