Default after download what next

Hello

I am using Kubuntu and intend to use Zimbra to replace Thunderbird. I have downloaded the following file into my home directory:
zdesktop_1_0_4_build_1833_linux_i686.sh

I have read some information but I do not understand what I have read and I do not know what to do now. If this file ended in .deb I would use
dpkg -i zdesktop_1_0_4_build_1833_linux_i686.deb
at the command line. If it ended .tar.g? I could simply use the GUI (Dolphin) to unpack it. Then change directory to go inside the new folder and find the executable.

This file is a new departure for me and I am stumped.

Any help appreciated

Stephanos

Why don't you try Zimbra Desktop 2 beta 2? Details are here: Zimbra Desktop 2.0 Beta 2 Released - read the FAQ and install instructions are there.

Default after download what next

Dear Bill

Thanks for the tip. I went here:
http://wiki.zimbra.com/wiki/Zimbra_Desktop_Download_and
_Install_FAQ
and downloaded
zdesktop_2_0_beta2_b10414_linux_i686.tgz
I used Dolphin to unpack it to the home directory and now I have a folder called
/home/stephanos1/zdesktop_2_0_beta2_b10414_linux_i686

I read the installation instructions at :
Zimbra Desktop Download and Install FAQ - Zimbra :: Wiki
" Where is the install location?
While you can choose to install to any folder on your computer, the default location is under the home directory of your system. In particular, these are the default paths on their respective platforms.
* Windows XP - C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local
Settings\Application Data\Zimbra\zdesktop
* Windows Vista - C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Zimbra\zdesktop
* Mac OS - /Users/<username>/zimbra/zdesktop
* Linux - /home/<username>/zimbra/zdesktop
In the rest of this FAQ we will refer to the install location as <install>. "

I cannot find anything at this web page that I recognise as installation instructions - sorry. I do not understand what the above information about install locations means either.

I do not know if the application is ready to use and if so what command I use to run the application. If I have not yet installed the application then I do not know what to do to achieve this.

These instructions do not help a novice user like myself.

Can anyone please clarify what I have to do now.

That's because you're looking at the wrong FAQ, go to the link I gave you earlier and there's a link to the FAQ for version 2 and it has a section titled Download and Install.

Default after downlaod what next

Thank you. I tried again and your link took me here:
(Page A) Zimbra Desktop 2.0 Beta 2 Released

Where I clicked the Linux link:
http://files2.zimbra.com/downloads/z...linux_i686.tgz
and downlaoded the file:
zdesktop_2_0_beta2_b10414_linux_i686.tgz

So far this is a repeat of what I tried before.

Still on the same page (A)
I have four other links:
1) The wiki Page - Zimbra Desktop 2.0 Beta 2 Release Notes. I read this page and there are no installation instructions that I recognise.
and
2) Zimbra Desktop 2 FAQ.
3) Zimbra Desktop Forums.
4) Zimbra Bugzilla

So I tried No2 and was taken to:
Zimbra Desktop 2 FAQ - Zimbra :: Wiki
This page has what look likes the information as I can see a link for section 2. Download and Install.
* 2.2 Where do I download the installer?
* 2.5 Where is the install location?

I clicked 2.2 and was taken to further down the page to
Zimbra Desktop 2 FAQ - Zimbra :: Wiki
Where I clicked the installer option and was taken to:
Zimbra Desktop 2 - Zimbra :: Wiki
where I found a section entitled:
"Software Installation - Installation Instructions for First Time Users"
It instructed me to:
"Download the installer for the operating system of your choice." I think I have done that.
Next it said:
"On Linux, if you choose default install location and/or want to perform multi-user installation, please run installer as root. See Zimbra Desktop FAQ for more information.
* Run the installation wizard and follow the step-by-step instructions."

Are these the installation instruction that you are referring to?

If so I do not understand what to do.

If these are not the installation instruction, can you please direct me to them.

How do I run the installation wizard?
Is this a command line instruction?
Do I have to be root, in my case put sudo at the beginning?

Any further help needed.
