Default Zimbra desktop with managed clients

Is this at all possible as it seems that I cannot change the location of the 'zdesktop' directory.
And for obvious reasons letting them run the application from their homedir. on the server is not an option.

Have you tried using the Zimbra Desktop 2 Beta 1? If not, I'd suggest you download and install that and also read the wiki links in the ZD 2 Beta announcement.
