It is successfully sent because you have sent it to the mail server that you're connected to which sends it to the intended destination - it does not mean successful delivery.

ZD can't tell the user the server is down because it can't know that. The mail server you're sending the mail through is the one that will know if your intended destination is 'down', it will retry the mail for a period of time (usually up-to five days) and then send you a notification, there are several names for it:
# NDR – Non-delivery report
# Bounce Message
# DSN - (failed) Delivery Status Notification
# NDN - Non-Delivery Notification
The time it takes for you get get one of those messages is determined by the administrator of the server you send mail through, it's not something that Zimbra Desktop has any control over.
