Default Can no longer start desktop

Hi, I have been using Zimbra Desktop for about a week. I set up 3 Yahoo accounts and everything worked fine until a few days ago. Now the program starts up but just keeps displaying the 3 red icons like it is trying to connect to the server and never shows the main window. The logs indicate that it is retrieving all mail info so any suggestions to get it to start up? BTW zdesktop.exe is running and restarting it doesn't help.

zdesktop.log:

I was also kicked in the head by a mule when I read in another post that iTunes 9 upgrade caused the start problem. I think that's about when this problem started for me too.

I have the same problem, but I traced it back to iTunes 9.
Did you install it or some other new application recently ?

Once Zimbra starts you can press shift+F6 to show the status bar.
From there you can start the Error Console.
If there any errors you can copy and paste them here.

Uh-huh. I added a comment above just as you replied.

This is the first time I have seen this after hours of searching the forums. Thanks.

I also noticed you can disable addons from the dropdown so I disabled the iTunes one and several others that I don't even want. After restarting Zimbra still no change.

I don't think we will have to wait too long for this to get fixed:
iTunes has been downloaded 1 million times over at fileforum alone,
so pretty soon there will not be many Windows machines with Zimbra working :/

In the meantime there is a couple of workarounds you can use:
Open the file "webapp.ini" in
%APPDATA%\..\Local Settings\Application Data\Zimbra\zdesktop\zdesktop.webapp\

1) You can open the uri in your browser.
2) you can change the value of navigation to true. When Zimbra opens and gets stuck hit the "Home" button it will take to your mail.

In both cases you lose the tray icon.
Hope this helps.
cheers

That's really funny but I doubt anyone will make the association. I only found one post revealing that info and I wasn't looking for it. It merely reminded me that iTunes had forced an update around the time Zimbra failed. They probably won't fix it soon considering that they think all Windows users are computer illiterates and won't know the difference. I guess that's not "making it easier for the rest of US" or "just work"ing is it? };-) Actually I am underwhelmed with the quirkiness of both iTunes and iPod's OS. Especially at how they differ so much from each other in functionality. For example, I have a large merged mp3 audiobook file that plays just fine in iTunes but skips to the end after 30 minutes in iPod. Why would the codec and error handling routines be different between the two apps?

I tried this and got the dreaded 404 error:

The page you were trying to access does not exist.

Eureka! This does work. Actually I had to hit Alt-Home on my machine.

OK for now but I would like a permanent solution eventually. Thanks in any case for the workaround. It will do for now. I will not marked it "solved" yet though until someone posts a more permanent solution. Meanwhile I think I'll write Stevie a nasty note. };-) I will also check the iTunes forums.

I just installed iTunes 9.0.1.8 and still no change. I don't find anything about the problem on any forums so they are no doubt either unaware of the problem they are causing or probably don't care if they are aware. I think the Zimbra developers need to take steps to prevent this from happening.

Hi I had the same problem. This has annoyed me enough that I have spent whole of last night looking into it.

I have tried to install/uninstall iTunes8 and iTunes9 to test this. ZD starts ok for situations of no-iTunes and iTunes8-installed, but does not start up with iTunes9-installed. ZD continues to work properly if I install iTunes9 after ZD has started. So this seem to be a startup issue.

With iTunes9 installed, I tried to rename a few iTunes/Apple and Firefox directories then tried to startup ZD with no success.

With each of the three situations (no-iTunes, iTunes8 and iTunes9), I used sysinternal's Process Monitor to monitor the file and registry accesses by ZD (zdclient.exe process) during startup. This is where I found to be strangest:

no-iTunes/iTunes8: there are some access to an "itlp" (which seems to be related to iTunes) under HKCU\Software\Classes\Mime\Database\Content Type\Extension, but no access to iTunes.exe

iTunes9: there are lots more accesses to "itlp" registry keys (at the above path, and other paths like HKCU\Software\Classes\iTunes.itlp\shell\open\comma nd, HKCR\iTunes.itlp\shell\open\command, HKCR\iTunes.itlp\shell\open\command\(Default), HKCR\iTunes.itlp, etc), and the strangest thing ZD tries to access & open iTunes.exe!

I hope thats enough evidence that someone from Zimbra can change one line of code and fix it all for us?

Wow, you've been busy. I doubt this post will do any good. Still the same problems.

Default what I've tried and results

For what it is worth...

I'm using Zimbra Desktop, provided by Yahoo, on Windows XP SP3.
I've been using it since it came out, with very little issues. In the last day or so, Zimbra will not load all the way. I'm not certain, but am pretty sure I did update Itunes in the last day or so.

I did a bunch of searches on the web, and found some threads about this error message when I opened the error console (hitting shift F6 while zimbra was loading). But they basically lead nowhere - with just some back and forth claiming that Itunes was the culprit, and zimbra folks couldn't do anything about it.

Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80540006 [nsIApplicationIcon.show]" nsresult: "0x80540006 (<unknown>)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://webrunner/content/webrunner.js :: anonymous :: line 692" data: no]

So I searched some more and found a thread that suggested trying to open zimbra in a browser by grabbing the URI from webapp.ini under

c:\Documents and Settings\any user name\Local Settings\Application Data\Zimbra\zdesktop\zdesktop.winapp\winapp.ini

and pasting it in a browser request window. This worked for both google chrome, and firefox.

By the way, there seems to be something wrong or changed with the zimbra FAQ, as several searches point to no longer existing urls - in the FAQ

There were a few other threads that I read, that lead me to try changing the settings in the webapp.ini.

Here's the original webapp.ini - with my uri truncated, since I guess it identifies me - This ini with my full blown uri did not work

[Parameters]
id=zdesktop@zimbra.com
name=Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop
uri=http://127.0.0.1:7633/desktop/login.jsp?at=092302
icon=launcher
status=false
location=false
sidebar=false
navigation=false
trayicon=true
splashscreen=splash.html
include=flickr.com

I tried several options. The one I was able to consistently get to work was as follows ( with my uri substituted for the uri) - basically I removed the last three lines, of the webapp.ini above.

[Parameters]
id=zdesktop@zimbra.com
name=Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop
uri=http://127.0.0.1:7633/desktop/login.jsp?at=092302
icon=launcher
status=false
location=false
sidebar=false
navigation=false

One more thing to note - with the "working" webapp.ini, the

Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80540006 [nsIApplicationIcon.show]" nsresult: "0x80540006 (<unknown>)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://webrunner/content/webrunner.js :: anonymous :: line 692" data: no]

still appears early on while loading zimbra, on the error console, but as the error console refreshes, the message goes away and zimbra loads. So, I'm guessing that the uncaught exception may not actually be related to my problem - but who knows, that also may lead to some variable not getting set, or not getting cleared.

While I was testing different webapp.ini versions, I restarted zimbra desktop service after each change I made. Once, after starting and stopping the service several times, as I tried different webapp.in versions, I got an error that zimbra could not attach, but at that point I was no longer able to access zimbra via a browser with my uri either. After rebooting my machine, I was able to access zimbra with the above "working/altered" webapp.ini.

You may be able to add more lines back in, since when loading with the above webapp.ini ther is no icon in the taskbar that allows you to quit and shutdown the service, but I got tired of debugging past this point.

By the way if this using the above webapp.ini works for you, if you minimize zimbra, you will have to go to start menu to get it back, since as I said above, but didn't totally comprehend what it meant, there is no icon in the task bar to click to return to zimbra - but when you go to the start menu, zimbra pops right back up.

Hopefully this information may help some of the developers.

I really like Zimbra, and hope the developers can get to the bottom of this.

I may crosspost - to a few other newsgroups. Hope that is okay

Also saw this post:

and specifically this piece of it:
a bug was already logged for mozilla-labs-prism at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=492110.

Please take a look and vote for this bug. Thanks.

I did, but there does not look like there is very much action on this bug
