On occasions I would like to insert animations or photos into the text of a message, but the only command is "attach", which is not how I want it observed. Is this an option?

Probably... when you attach (e.g. click on Attach button, not drag/drop), there is a check-box at the bottom called "Show images in message body" - try that.
yes, you need to use HTML
Thanks, I just sent a message to a friend with both an animation and a photo inserted. It looked great, but if he only uses web-mail will he have any difficulty in opening the message, and will the embedded objects be able to be viewed in the format sent?
One other issue, I don't find a spell check icon while in HTML format. Does it perform the check automatically.
Thanks again.
