Just to sort of wrap up this thread - which is a carry over from the linkedin group, dealing with ZCS not ZD - to avoid confusion I won't split it up.
ZD (jhoelz):
As of Beta 3 / Build 1278 we now provide suggestions in Prism (it previously just underlined):
Bug 30610 - Spellcheck suggests don't work in email editor
In RC2 / build 1513 we hid the button rather than adding aspell (because we need apache for that):
Bug 23112 - support spell check
So you'll have to rely on the built-in features of other browsers when using IE/FF/Safari, but the button is no longer there for confusion.

Yup, as pointed out by Klug on linkedin/by yourself above, we use apache just for the spellchecker, for HTTP/IMAP/Pop we use Jetty in 5.0 (previously Tomcat in 4.5 prior).

It's also time to upgrade to 5.0.14/.15
There really hasn't been many issues/much done with aspell since then, but it helps to troubleshoot from current.
5.0.2:
Bug 16819 - Spellcheck for basic client
5.0.6:
Bug 27834 - Upgrade aspell to 0.60.6
5.0.11:
Bug 30988 - Spellcheck suggest don't work in 'Always compose in new window'

For others coming along; after you check zmcontrol status (which were assuming is going to show us it's zimbraServiceInstalled/zimbraServiceEnabled but has an error) start with a zmapachectl/zmspellctl restart, then check the log: /opt/zimbra/log/http_error.log
The /opt/zimbra/log/zimbra.log for kicks if you think it's a larger issue/interaction with mailboxd. (/var/log/zimbra.log is mainly status & postfix / probably wont have anything on it.)
If no errors in the log what do you get on visiting the zimbraSpellCheckURL?
http:// server:7780 < shold report 'it works'
http:// server:7780/aspell.php < should give you a testing area
