Default Google sync - WOW!

With the release of google sync i just can't resist on the possibility of moving my email on to gmail. It's good and it's free.

Also i don't have very confidential emails so i can have them somewhere outside my office.

IMO Zimbra should include it's mobile tool into the open source and network edition for free in order to compete with gmail.

Google Mobile - Sync

Thoughts?

Are you suggesting zDesktop should be free, open source and available ?

Because it is.
It's been since it exists.

Not really. Google Sync has nothing similar to zDesktop.

I'm talking about zimbra mobile in where you get exchange alike features for zimbra.
Thats what google Sync is offering for free now.

Cheers!

Oh yes, sorry.
Google is making too many announcements, I can't follow...

There's also z-Push : Z-Push - open source push technology

Someone is working on backends for ZCS : http://www.zimbra.com/forums/adminis...nd-z-push.html
It could become much more popular than Funambol if a "team" works on it.

The new google sync is sending only calendar and contacts, not email. It's nice but I dont see it causing any real competition for Zimbra.

Push email is easy with IDLE support and that gmail has that already.

I'm all for zimbra but gmail is offering more options everytime and always for free.

ActiveSync is the only item that made everyone here think twice between exchange and zimbra and having this in gmail for free it's awesome.

Thanks for the links! I'll look into them.

I dont think gmail is a bad thing, however I think for businesses its not a wise choice. If you have never read gmails EULA (who reads a EULA these days anyway) you will see that for this "free", awesome service, you are giving up privacy within your emails. Here is gmails EULA. Do you want to trade your privacy and security for something thats free? Nothing is free. (except a few things) Someone is paying for it somewhere.

God Bless,
Marty

You are right, i haven't read their EULA. My philosophy is that if it's REALLY bad i will know about it around the net

I think gmail bots may read your email not humans. Anyway, i they did, i don't have (or we dont have) anything to hide. From the kind of business we are i think gmail is a great option but i personally like zimbra better.

Is it too difficult for zimbra to give it's mobile tool as part of the product? For a small business like us exchange is cheaper than zimbra because of things like that.

Thanks,

I guess I don't quite the see the attraction of push per se compared to manual/scheduled sync. But sync of calendar/contacts sure is a nice feature.

RemoteCalendar - ?a CalDAV iPhone Client looks like it may be an alternate way of getting (partway) there.

is that ok?
