Default Issues with Zimbra Desktop on Ubuntu 10.4

I began using Zimbra Desktop (and Zimber mail) recently on Ubuntu 10.4. I really like the user interface so far but I've experienced a couple of issues today.

When Zimbra Desktop starts up it shows animation while it's loading. In some cases the animation continues and the initialization doesn't complete. I've tried stopping and restarting without success. The only thing that seemed to make a difference is starting Mozilla Firefox. As soon as I do that then Zimbra Desktop initializes.

The second issue is I seem to have lost the folders in my Zimbra mail account in the desktop client. I only see a Tags subfolder and none of the others ones like Inbox.

Any suggestions on how to get the folders back or what to look for if it's not loading properly.

This is bizarre but after every boot-up now my Zimbra desktop fails to initialize. It just displays the loading animation. I've left it running for as long as 15-20 minutes. If I then log on to my Zimbra Mail through Firefox, stop and start Zimbra desktop, it initializes correctly.

Looking at About Zimbra Desktop I see:

"Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686 (x86_64); en-GB; rv:1.9.2.9pre) Gecko/20100914 Prism zdesktop/2.0"

As much as I like Zimbra desktop I like my mail clients starting up without glitches first thing in the morning.

Take a peek at zdesktop.log, perhaps there is an error.

Also, when it is in the 'stuck' state try issuing kill -QUIT <ZD pid> to produce a thread dump and then attach zdesktop.out here.

Lastly, you can try resetting the account in ZD on the account setup page. It sounds like some of the folders did not synchronize correctly; resetting will force ZD to reinitialize and download everything from the server.

I'm having the same issue with the folders. Only tags are showing up. I've reset the account, that didn't help. I then deleted the account and set it back up. That didn't help either. Is there some kind of setting in ZD to hide folders? I'm using ZD 2.0

Edit: I'm using ZCS Network Edition 6.0.8. I'll be updating the server to 6.0.9 over the weekend.

It seems I spoke too soon. Removing the account and re-adding it seems to have fixed the issue.

I don't see any errors in zdesktop.log. Issuing kill -QUIT <ZD pid> killed the process but did not result in a thread dump in zdesktop.out.

I still have this issue. Usually on the second attempt ZD manages to launch.

This usually means you are running as root or with sudo privileges. You should run /opt/zimbra/zdesktop/linux/user-install.pl as well as the command line it displays on exit as a 'normal' user.

I've opened a ticket for this:
Bug 54781 – ZD never goes past loading animation at startup
