Default Couldn't access Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop served

My desktop client started hanging on the sync today, so I reinitialized it. that took forever, so I rebooted the machine and then reinstalled Zimbra

I now get this message:

Couldn't access Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop server. If issue persists after reinstall, please check logs for errors and report to Zimbra Desktop - Zimbra - Forums.

not sure what log files or which part I should be showing.
using Vista Home Premium

the zdesktop.out log shows:
0 INFO [main] log - Logging to org.slf4j.impl.Log4jLoggerAdapter(org.mortbay.log) via org.mortbay.log.Slf4jLog
437 INFO [main] log - jetty-6.1.5
593 INFO [main] log - No Transaction manager found - if your webapp requires one, please configure one.
Zimbra server process is running as uid=-1 euid=-1 gid=-1 egid=-1
1170 INFO [main] security - keystore not present

the zdesktop.log file has a lot of stuff but doesn't appear to have any errors

the logs are all dates shortly after I reinstalled - if I try to open Zimbra again, no messages are written to the logs despite the error message shown on the screen

Default I went into Services and tried to start the server

error message "Windows could not star tthe Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop SErvice service on local compiter

Error 1: Incorrect function

please check any errors in your Event Viewer
