Default Extending Web Client UI

I am looking to use zimbra for my lab's general purpose portal for personal email, documents, projects, updates and other features. The wiki for zimbra has an article on extending the UI for the Admin console; is there some some similar way to do this for the Web Client? When a user logs into there account I want it to default to the lab's blog, and I was imagining making it an additional tab, but is there a better way to do this? In the event that Zimbra would stop being developed for is there a way to export documents, contacts, and contacts list?

Any help is much appreciated.

It could be so simple as REST -formats for returned data.
atom/rss (mail or cal), csv (contacts), vcf (contacts) ics (cal), ifb (cal busy data), zip (easily export messages) as well as native & sync
