use existing functions in skin links/buttons

Is it possible to link existing functions to links or buttons that I create in the interface with the skin? I figure it should be I just can’t figure out how to go about it.

For example: in the Composer, rather than having the formatting options in the toolbar (HTML/Plain Text) I’ve made a link just above the text box. Currently I’m just using ajax to click the formatting button in the toolbar (which I’ve hidden) when the link I created is clicked. I would like to call the functions these buttons call directly if possible.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
