Default Basic Open Source Question in contact of Zimbra

I have a couple of questions to pose about Open Source and how it relates to Zimbra from a developers point of view.

1) If a developer wants to leverage the Open Source version of Zimbra to build additional functionality on top of, in the end what are the restrictions. In othe words, can a developer take the Open Source version of Zimbra, modify the underlying code, leverage it, built new functionality on top of it while utilizing the features already present and be legal.

2) Is there any documents that would give me details on #1 from a Zimbra point of view that explain things in a basic, easy to understand manner. I have read the a couple questions and responses in the forum, but they mainly were discussing the overall approach to Open Source.

Thanks for the support...

Thanks for the reply. I will review the FAQ again and read it more carefully.

I guess what I was wondering was if there was a Open Source for Dummies type FAQ, kind of like:

1) Can someone take the Zimbra Open Source Edition, modify or enhance it and use it to run a service / site that offers both Zimbra functionality and functionality that is developed on top of it.

ect....

Thanks.

The short answer is yes, you can. Long answer, read the licenses and faq carefully, there are conditions attached (of course!).
