Default New Install on Debian Lenny - Java problems when starting

I've just finished doing a new install, with a view to testing then go live as quickly as possible (old exchange server on the verge of falling over a cliff)...

Got to building the zimbra install, and came across a problem with the java elements (at least that's what I think it is)...

Here's the verbose stuff from running ./install.sh (/home/public/p4/GNR-607/ZimbraBuild/zcs-6.0.7_GA_2513.DEBIAN5_64.20100808224453)

I've checked `java -version` and get the following (which again I think is correct)...

Can someone point me in the direction of where it might be going wrong, or indeed what to do?!!!

Thanks
Nunners

PS: I know about the port conflicts, and once zimbra is up and running will resolve those accordingly...

Is this a built version (I see that it is and I'll move this thread to the Developer forum) and if it is why didn't you use the binary download for Debian?

Not sure to be honest... I think it might be because I'm on an AMD64 machine... but it's been over a month since I started this (been on holiday)... that I'm going to start afresh, and use the binary download for Debian 5....

I'll update the results here!

Then if you're not actually developing anything for Zimbra how about trying the binary build, it should be less problematic.

The build needs to package the Java it finds at p4/<branch>/ThirdPartyBuilds/<arch>/java/. That package needs to match what was specified in the definition files (jdk1.6.0_16.tar.gz IIRC for 6.0.7). It *must* be the Sun/Oracle java, Debian's self built open java does not work.

I've now cleaned everything off, and started again, and it's gone through the install fine this time - must have been a conflict in what I was originally trying to do!... I'm going to amend the instructions on the Wiki to point to the fact that you can install it from the Binary, as it didn't make this completely clear!

I've now started the services, but mailbox won't stay running without erroring... now looking into this... but think it might be a conflict with apache, as I may not have disabled apache properly... but thought I had!

Ok... so we're getting somewhere here....

Everything is now installed, but still got a few startup problems. I can't view via http/https and I can't get mailbox service to stay running. I think (although I'm only guessing) that if I sort out the mailbox problems, everything else may click into place?!!!

The problem with the mailbox I thought was related to my poor dns records locally, as there's nat involved etc etc.

Now if I do a dig it comes out as follows:

Code:
zimbra@wales:~$ hostname
wales.noahsarkdaynurseries.co.uk
zimbra@wales:~$ zmhostname
wales.noahsarkdaynurseries.co.uk
zimbra@wales:~$ dig `zmhostname`

That I think now is correct... so what else could it be?

zimbra.log doesn't show a lot either, but here is the service I think trying to restart itself (?)
Code:
Aug 10 09:06:20 wales zmmailboxdmgr[25827]: status requested
Aug 10 09:06:20 wales zmmailboxdmgr[25827]: stale pid 8667 found in /opt/zimbra/log/zmmailboxd_manager.pid: No such process

Aug 10 09:06:20 wales zmmailboxdmgr[25827]: assuming no other instance is running
Aug 10 09:06:20 wales zmmailboxdmgr[25827]: no manager process is running

Any help gratefully received!!!

Thanks
Nunners

According to the information you've posted here there's no MX record but you actually should use the commands listed in the 'Verify' section of the Split DNS article. What you're doing is using the FQDN in the dig commands when you should actually be using the domain name and that's not correct.

Thanks for the reply. I've actually now sorted it... there were a few problems. The DNS was actually ok, jut unfortunately the server was using the wrong local DNS server....

Also, the main problem was that dovecot was running in the background, without me realising, and thus causing port conflicts... all resolved now and working....
