external application authenticating against zimbra ldap ?

Hello there

I am new to opend ldap and I want to know what are the steps I should take to have an external application authenticate against the openldap from zimbra ? what are the steps I should take ?

The users that will authenticate again zimbra open ldap (hopefully) will be in two categories:
1- all zimbra users
2-selected zimbra users

is there a way of adding something in the ldap for this ? is there an example anybody did ? any hints ?
