Debian/Ubuntu Packaging

I am interested in Packaging Zimbra to submit to the Ubuntu Repositories. The question is, what would be required from the Zimbra side to make this possible. I do not plan on making any code changes, only pulling the source in-order to create a debian package.

He's talking about making a package and adding it to the Ubuntu repos so you can just do eg. "aptitude install zimbra-server"

This is correct. The goal is to use Zimbra in a sub distribution that is being discussed for Ubuntu. If the packaging is possible, then it would be easy to include in releases of the sub-distro.

Okay, but why can't the package just be a "meta"-package that just downloads the .tgz of the same version, extracts it to a temp location, and runs the included install.sh?

Kinda like how flashplugin-nonfree works.

And this is why flashplugin-nonfree is not part of main. There are numerous advantages to having it build from source and in a prober repo. One of the is that it's easy to patch and update. Another is that when the distro gets updated it will be build with all the distros current libraries and you won't end up with bugs like this : Bug 31276 – Postfix processes segfaults when ldap authentication is enabled on Ubuntu 8.04
