Default Trouble installing MySQL4.1.18 on Fedora core 4

Guys,
I am stuck at a strange problem. I have installed mysql on fedora in /opt/zimbra/mysql directory. It works fine if I start it with --skip-grant-tables options using mysqld_safe. If I use --no-defaults instead and if I try and start the client using ./bin/mysql -uroot -p option I always keep getting following error:
"ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES)"
After starting the server if I want to shut it down using "mysqladmin shutdown", I get a similar error, so each time I have to kill the mysqld processes. I entered zimbra password for root manually using update statement. Since I want to execute "grant all on *.* ..." statement as suggested in ZimbraServer/docs/Install.text I should be able to invoke the client using root as username and zimbra as password. I have googled enough on it and have tried all the possible options. Nothing seems to work.
Any help shall be highly appreciated.
Thanks

Why don't you use the zmmyinit script to set up your sql instance?

Thanks marc. I tried using zmmyinit script, butit calls another script which inturn calls yet another script under {zimbra_home}/bin directory. There is no bin directory under zimbra home in the source. Can you please tell me how to go around this.
Thanks

Check to see what's installed in bin in the core package - check ZimbraBuild/defs/coretargets.def for the bin directory. Most of it will be the stuff in ZimbraServer/src/bin.
