Searches not returning what they should

I'm posting this in developers since I'm doing some Zimlet development that does a simple search to round up some messages. My searches look like the following:

message:700 or conv:734 or conf:755

From my understanding, that should return the single message plus all the messages in the conversations, but all I get is just the conversations and not the single message. Does the "message:" object not work in queries, or could it be something else?
