Certificate chaining validation

Hi Everyone
I'm working on validation of certificate chains in matrixSsl. I have certain queries i would like some one to help me out:

1 : While establishing the connection does the server provide the client with the entire list of certificates in the chain in order at one go to validate its certificate coz the client will have only the root certificate(i.e the CA).

2: Or does it provide only its certificate and the client in order to validate requests for the parent certificate again....
Could some one help me out ..
