Zimbra as a devlopment tool

Zimbra is famous for its messaging and mailing but I wanted to know whether it can be used for devoloping applications, and also I wanted to know which type of applications can be devloped. Are there any Applicaions devloped in Zimbra Environment.

You really need to define 'zimbra environment' - what's your goal?
There's a serious collection of software packages we're talking about here- OpenLDAP, MySQL, Apache, Tomcat, Jetty(5.0), Postfix, Lucene, Verity, ClamAV, SpamAssassin, DSPAM (though off by default) AMaViS/Amavisd-new, Aspell, James/Sieve, Perdition, NGINX(5.0), etc.
Calls against a zimbra component? Modification of the web-client? Integration with a third party web service or API? Custom skin/portal?
