Hi all

You definitely have my vote to port Zimbra to Solaris. My company is testing the Open Source edition of Zimbra as an Exchange replacement, using RHEL4. It works just fine - and once we're all happy we will move to the 60-day NE trial, and once the kinks are all ironed out (user migration etc.) we are looking at purchasing maybe 400 licenses. Yes, I believe that's real cash for the Zimbra people who are following the money.

Anything as critical as mail should run on a proper enterprise-class OS, andSolaris is that in spades, and their new hardware is some serious bang for the buck.

If Zimbra had a Solaris port you would definitely see some heavy-weights taking it very seriously, people are dying to move off Exchange, and they will pay $$$. Seriously guys, wake up to the possibilities here. You have a fantastic product (except for HTML signatures ;-) ), make the transition.

I actually know of a few setups running on Sun hardware (x86/64bit - obviously not SPARC) with RHEL

A Solaris Port is a must if Zimbra is it to be taken seriously. SOHO &
Enterprise clients are all looking for a solution today, this has been
going on for 2 years now.

The common excuse that you are chasing the $$ and that their is no
demand is growing thin. Maybe you need a new Sales & Marketing
Team, if they sent out some basic info to the top 500 corporations,
they might be shocked at the response. You could also try working
with SUN.

We are only a small company of 5, we have been using Sun Boxes &
Solaris for the past 8 years, 4 years ago we installed SunRay 150 thin
clients.

We have numerous clients that have less than 10 employees running
Sun Boxes, SunRay 150 thin clients, Star Office & Solaris 10.
It Just Works.

Hears a thought, If porting is an expensive and tedious process, why
not make Zimbra Platform Independent ?

But look at the whole picture, if it’s too expensive and starts with a 25
User Licence and an ongoing yearly fee, it will defeat the purpose.
SOHO do not mind paying for a product that fits into their environment,
but its hard to sell a company with 10 employees a 25 user package with
ongoing yearly license costs. I think your Sales & Marketing Team needs
to go back to the drawing board. The Enterprise market looks at the cost
per seat and operational / support costs, if they match their current set up,
then there is no incentive for them to switch, yes they too look at the $$.

One of my clients is a small company of about 20 people that was recently looking to expand the capabilities of their mail server (they had been using a basic Postfix and IMAP setup, and wanted something that could do calendaring and that their salespeople could access remotely from their smart phones).

They took a look at Zimbra, and they were impressed with the feature set, but they ended up going with something else, mainly because neither of their preferred platforms (FreeBSD and Suse 10.2) were supported. Fortunately, they've been very pleased with the Google Apps setup they settled on, but I can't help but wonder how many potential sales Zimbra loses because of the limited selection of supported platforms.

I thought my email alert for this board was going to bring news of the latest release for solaris... I'm so impatient to get the latest Solaris build!!

I guess I just have to be a little more patient...

BTW - does anyone know if Zimbra offers official training classes for their product in large-scale environments? (Installation, configuration, etc.)

Yes we do offer classes. We just finished a session, and will be holding more soon!

OK, I'm a bit worried now... News today is that Zimbra was just bought by Yahoo. Can anyone on the zimbra team confirm whether or not the product will continue to be opensource or is Yahoo looking to use the product only for their own customers/users (ie - yahoo mail)? I'm wondering if this will have repercussions for large customers....

Now I'm more anxious to know when version 5 will be released so dijichi2 can graciously compile it on solaris before it may be too late...
