At first blush, to me it doesn't sound like a good thing. I don't really care for Yahoo that much, they aren't really in the business of developing software for sale, so I can only presume they wanted to beef up their own yahoo mail system. I would guess they would be less inclined to support competitors to yahoo's webmail (current ISP customers).

Default I'm not a big fan of Yahoo

This doesn't follow Yahoo's business model, except for the hosting of personal e-mail or charging for business clients. Yahoo isn't very friendly with the Open Source movement.

Yahoo likes to charge for everything, including inclusion into their search results ($50 / year).

I am very disappointed this transaction occurred, although I would have approved if I owned Zimbra shares . Nevertheless, I would have preferred Google buy Zimbra. Google does a good job of keeping things open. For example, look at their acquisition of FeedBurner... Good bye fees, hello premium services.

At least do me a favor and open up the iSync app for Mac for the Open Source version of Zimbra?

Meh....I don't like Yahoo! either...

We're a paying customer for Network Edition.

If it doesn't negatively impact the development and support teams at Zimbra...then I'm indifferent. If we have to rebrand all our support info and documentation because the Zimbra name is no longer valid....that will be a PITA.

If support and the product itself goes to pot due to Yahoo! mismanagement after we've gone through the immense headache of migrating thousands of users....we are going to be freaking pissed to say the least.

I guess we'll see...the proof is in the pudding as they say.

Good Luck Zimbra...(did I say I hate buyouts?)
Matt

Is there a specific open source item that you are referring to?

From my experience with YUI they have been very good with their opensource. They even released it under the BSD license and not their own oddly structed open source license others like to use...

Default It still could get worse...

We have all heard the rumors over the past year about Microsoft's interest in Yahoo.

Just imagine if they actually decided to buy Yahoo...

Default Ok, last post in regard to Yahoo's Open Source

Yes, I have reviewed their YUI.

So, what else have they done to enhance the Open Source Community?

It sounds like a great thing for Zimbra and its employees. It doesn't bother me as long as we don't end up with Yahoo advertising (especially in the open source version) and anything remotely close to the Yahoo toolbar/messenger/etc. If Zimbra stays like it is and stays on track with what has already been planned but with more financing and resources, great

I read a few weeks ago that Yahoo was bringing out a new version of their webmail that included "mashups" to hover over things like e-mail addresses and phone numbers. At the time I figured they'd just stolen your ideas, but I guess I should have realized then that this deal was probably already in the works..

Is it fair to say that their new webmail (which I haven't seen yet) is based on your technology?
