    Default ZCS 3.2 Beta Available

    ****** 3.2 IS BETA QUALITY ******

Lots of new and exciting features, but lot of new bugs that may eat your data or crash your system. Do not use this on a production system. It's for testing and preview of new functionality. It's also useful to verify bugs that have been fixed in 3.2 from previous releases.

We are running this in house for our Zimbra mail but it's strongly advised to run this in a testing/dev environment only.

    ****** 3.2 IS BETA QUALITY ******

If your still reading here's the some of the new things in 3.2. Some of these like FC5 and 64bit support are not in this beta.

The following are some of the new feature highlights coming in ZCS 3.2 (* indicates that the feature is available in the Network Edition only):

    END USER FEATURES
    • Zimbra “Documents”.
ZCS 3.2 includes a new application called “Documents”.
The Documents application enables users to create, organize, and share rich web documents, including the ability to embed images, spreadsheets, and other rich content objects via the ALE (AJAX Linking and Embedding) specification. External documents can also be uploaded, and each Documents repository can be organized in Wiki-style format, enabling intelligent linking and navigation.

Key Benefit: Provides a repository for sharing files and content across teams and groups, with the added benefit of enabling users to create, edit, and view rich and complex documents using only a web browser.

    • Shared Address Books.
In ZCS 3.2, the “Contacts” application has been renamed to
“Address Book”. Users can create multiple Address Books in a mailbox, assign contacts to specific Address Books, and share each Address Book independently. Recipients of shared Address Books can view them in the Address Book application, and look up the associated shared contacts when composing messages.

Key Benefit: Enables greater flexibility in how contacts are managed, and the ability to share contacts across teams and groups.

    • Share with Distribution Lists.
Users can now share ZCS items with distribution lists.
Key Benefit: Enables efficient broad-scale sharing of Address Books, Calendars, and Notebooks.

    • Skins.
The ZCS end user UI now comes in multiple skins, enabling end users to
customize the UI for their specific preferences.

Key Benefit: Enables flexibility in the ZCS end user UI, which can be used for
    branding or other personal preferences.

    • Keyboard Navigation.
The ZCS web client now includes keyboard mappings for all
core user functions in the Mail application.

Key Benefit: Provides improved user flexibility and productivity via keyboard
shortcuts for actions that previously required mouse clicks/movements.

    • Zimbra Assistant
The Zimbra Assistant is an optional popup dialog that enables
users to quickly interact with mail, calendar, contacts, Zimlets, and other elements of the ZCS via quick shortcut commands.

Key Benefit: Provides improved user flexibility and productivity via quick command shortcuts that do not change the underlying application context.

    • Auto-complete from GAL
The “auto-complete” functionality present when composing messages, creating calendar appointments, choosing share recipients, and
other name choosing scenarios can now auto-complete from the “Global Address List” (GAL), as opposed to only auto-completing from the user’s personal contacts.

Key Benefit: Greatly expands the scope of auto-complete, enabling faster and more productive name selection.

    OUTLOOK® FEATURES

    • PST Calendar Migration
The ZCS Import Wizard for Outlook now includes the
ability to import calendar data from Outlook PSTs to the ZCS server.

Key Benefit: Provides an additional mechanism to migrate calendar data from
    existing Outlook environments.

    • Outlook Delegated Access*
Users can now create sharing properties for mail,
calendar, and contacts folders via Outlook, and can view/manage shared folders via Outlook. In addition, sharing properties are synced between Outlook and the ZCS server, enabling users to use either Outlook or the ZCS web client to create and view shared folders, with appropriate permissions in either location.

Key Benefit: Enables Outlook users to create, view, and manage shared items, using sharing properties that operate interchangeably with the Zimbra web client.

    ZIMBRA MOBILE FEATURES

    • Mail sync (beta)*.
Zimbra Mobile now provides native two-way synchronization of
mail for the Treo 650, Treo 700w, and other Windows Mobile 5 devices.
Key Benefit: Enables users of popular mobile devices to use a single synchronization profile/process for mail, calendar, and contacts (calendar sync and contacts sync are existing Zimbra Mobile features).

    ADMINISTRATION FEATURES
    • IMAP/POP Proxy
The ZCS now includes native integration with Perdition, an open source, fully-featured proxy server for IMAP/POP traffic (SSL or non-SSL).

Key Benefit: Enables more efficient scaling and server load distribution for
deployments with large numbers of IMAP/POP users.

    • Improved Management of Large Numbers of Domains
The ZCS Admin UI now includes the ability to search for domains, page through lists of domains, and auto-filter domain lists based on real-time matches to entered keystrokes.

Key Benefit: Enables more efficient administration in environments with large
    numbers of domains.

    • Improved Distribution List Management
The ZCS Admin UI now includes a “Member Of” tab in the account maintenance module that shows which DLs the user is a member of directly or indirectly (i.e. via another DL). The new view also includes the ability to search for DLs and quickly add/remove the user from DLs.

Key Benefit: Enables more efficient management of user/DL relationships.

    • Virtual Hosting.
Administrators can now input “virtual host” names in association
with each domain, meaning that any user logging into one of the “virtual host” URLs will by default be associated with the corresponding domain.

Key Benefit: Enables a virtualized login experience by allowing login domains to be different from email domains.

    • Exchange® Calendar Migration
The ZCS Migration Wizard for Exchange now includes the ability to migrate calendar data from Exchange to the ZCS server.

Key Benefit: Provides a mechanism to migrate calendar data from existing Exchange environments.

    • ZCS Open Source Edition on FC 5
The ZCS Open Source Edition is now available on Fedora Core 5.

Key Benefit: Provides additional server platform flexibility for ZCS administrators.

    • ZCS Network Edition on SUSE ES 9*
The ZCS Network Edition is now available on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9.

Key Benefit: Provides additional server platform flexibility for ZCS administrators.

    • ZCS Network Edition* and Open Source Edition on 64-bit RHEL4.
The ZCS Network Edition and Open Source Edition are now available for 64-bit Red Hat Enterprise Linux Version 4 systems.

Key Benefit: Enables administrators to run the ZCS on 64-bit systems.

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet. Thanks to zimbra for getting this beta out and allowing us to play with new features and hopefully start developing stuff without going through the pain of the cvs build.

Is the beta released the same code as you run inhouse, and how much of my data can i expect it to eat?! Beta means a wide variety of things these days...

**warning** to those other serial upgraders like me to think twice before putting this on any important box.

whoa! ok, this really is beta. on my debian install anyway the upgrade was flawless however it crashes constantly (web interface, not sure if the backend still functioning) and certain interfaces things (like the entire options area) were unavailable for me. can`t say i wasn`t warned though!! good thing i made a backup, will restore and plonk this beta on a test box. thanks still to zimbra though for making this available to use to test.

We are running it in house for our @zimbra.com mail... That's a bar we must pass before we release anything. However as you noticed there are some very rough spots still. In general the RedHat release will have more cycles on it as that's what our primary server runs. The QA team has smoke tested the other builds and basic smoke testing passed but lots of land mines remain so the strong warning.

Question Not to be a pain, but..

Any thoughts on the timeline when this will be fully functional? I know KevinH previously has said late summer. The reason is we are getting ready to deploy 3.1.3 live in the next month or so.

    Thanks!!

The GA release of this code is currently still set for late summer. Ideally we'll get another beta out in the coming weeks that will be more stable.

I didn't see any mention of the Asterisk integration. I do see the zimlet to be deployed. I would have imagined this was a big feature

    Default What about Tasks/Todos?

Tasks was a big thing that was missed migrating from Exchange that we don't have.
I do like the idea of the Documents and that acting like a wiki, I will have to try that out.

    I can't upgrade version 3.1.4_GA

Don't know if this is to be expected, so thought I'd post.
