Emails using commands

I was wondering if Its allowed to send mails using the command line ?? or any other methods than using the UI??

If so, then How??

I've found that manually sending messages using telnet from a shell is very helpful in diagnosing bugs and testing solutions. Here is a good write-up on how to do this. Of course this isn't a preferred method for communications, but for debugging, there's nothing quicker and easier.
