GAL - populate list?

Hi all,

When a user selects TO and global address list - is there any way to get the list to "pre-populate" or does the user have to use the search?

short answer-it's half bug/half left off on purpose
It is kinda left off to avoid ldap or active directive calls-expecially if your a large organization with a huge gal.
But there is a bug open you can vote on about that.

To get the 'to' GAL search to populate names:
my method: type . (period) and hit search
another method: type the domain name and hit search
(basically anything that's in everyone's addresses)

you can increase the results # of results returned in GAL searches via the admin console -probably under the domain section

along those lines-because you probably will ask (but it still won't show you stuff by default; as the default is set to GAL not personal address book)
You can copy the contents of the GAL to a personal address book (I know your a small organization but this is not normally done-expecially in large organizations because you can't keep those personal address books up to date)

It would be nice if one could split the GAL search.
We are an .edu & use external OpenLDAP as our GAL.
The student list is huge and the staff list small so staff complain about the
student list.

I know what you mean, currently the split is by domain (though it is possible to have multiple domains and point the GAL to both) but I would love the option to see only those in your domain & COS.

So you while you assign faculty & staff a larger quota (and a bunch of other settings/extras etc) but keep the student options to a minimum; you also keep all the teacher personal contact data away from students...

What you can do is-
In the 'student's COS':
Uncheck the box to let students search the GAL at all...cuts down on some serious abuse, and a lot of ldap calls.

This still doesn't solve your teacher complaints of the huge returned directory (because sometimes they want the student info but mostly do not).
You could search for all the teachers-then copy them to personal address books, but then you have tons of copies, wasted space, and the possibility of being out of date.

I'm hunting-but don't see this as a current open bug-feel free to open a new request!

Just thought of this after I posted:
The other day I ran accross someone who put in a request to search other GAL fields/attributes (like say company or department) besides just names & email addresses.

That would solve your problem also-people could just search by dept (faculty).
