    Default Connection refused on 389? How do I troubleshoot?

    From the wiki:
    Failure to Connect

    To detect connection failure (using the hostname configured for the ldap server):
    telnet ldaphostname 389
    If this times out, or the connection is refused, there could be several causes.

    Anyone know what these several causes are?

    Thanks.

    Is there a firewall between you and the Zimbra server (iptables, pix, etc)? If you do it from the local Zimbra server, do you get the same response?

    If you do as the zimbra user: zmcontrol status, what do you get?

    Default

    well obvious ones i would have thought would be:

    1) slapd not running (ps -ef |grep slap)
    2) firewall running (iptables -L, iptables -F to flush)

    love your job title

    Default Command outputs

    There is no firewall between client and machine. Same results exist when attempt is made to connect from local zimbra machine.

    # ps -ef |grep slap
    zimbra 26499 1 0 10:16 ? 00:00:01 /opt/zimbra/openldap/libexec/slapd -l LOCAL0 -4 -u zimbra -h ldap://hydrogen.aircontrolsystems.us:389 -f /opt/zimbra/conf/slapd.conf
    root 31303 12605 0 10:47 pts/0 00:00:00 grep slap

    # iptables -L
    Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)
    target prot opt source destination

    Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT)
    target prot opt source destination

    Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT)
    target prot opt source destination

    $ zmcontrol status
    Host hydrogen.aircontrolsystems.us
    antispam Running
    antivirus Running
    ldap Running
    logger Running
    mailbox Running
    mta Running
    snmp Running
    spell Running

    Any ideas?

    Default Update

    $ telnet 192.168.1.1 389
    Trying 192.168.1.1...
    telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused

    $ telnet 127.0.0.1 389
    Trying 127.0.0.1...
    telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused

    $ telnet hydrogen.aircontrolsystems.us 389
    Trying 127.0.1.0...
    ESTABLISHED...

    My host file contained a loop back entry instead of the static IP I set. Rectified. Thanks.
