Default Integrating / sending mail from custom app

Could someone tell me if it's feasible to integrate a custom app with Zimbra?

We would like to be able to send emails from Zimbra users accounts and to store those emails in the "Sent" folder of those users. Our app is written in PHP. Does anyone know if this is even feasible?

It depends on how your custom app interacts with zimbra, and what you want it to do.

If all you want, is an MTA without all of the bells and whistles, you might be better with just postfix or sendmail.

The goal would be for any email sent by our custom app, to appear in the "sent" folder of the user (who initiated the email) Zimbra account.

eg. User clicks a button that generates a reminder email of some kind, the email is sent (to the appropriate recipient), and the Zimbra user can refer to their "sent" items folder in their zimbra account if they need to.

Sure we could do it without Zimbra in the mix, and just program a script and add the users account in the "from". But I'd like to know if it's feasible to store those sent items in the Zimbra users "sent" folder, without the user actually typing out the message.

You could use IMAP to save a copy of the message in the user's "sent" folder. The issue is that you would need the user's Zimbra password or possibly you could have the sent folder shared to another account and update messages that way. It probably depends on the number of users.
