How to Purge a Mailbox

Hello,

I have some Mailboxes with thousands of messages in their mailbox. The deletion process from the web client is time consuming. Is there a way for us to help them through command line to delete these unwanted messages?

Does zmmailbox emptyFolder Trash do what you want?

Excellent thank you. in my case, I set up a cron job:
zmmailbox -z -m postmaster@xxxxxxx.com emptyFolder Inbox

It clears out the inbox of our postmaster user because it receives tens of thousands of messages per day from all our dedicated clients. this is basically blackhole functionality that we used to have with qmail. :-)

Also, in the admin console gui > individual user (or COS) > advanced tab > scroll to the bottom > and you can set:

Spam message lifetime -Number of days a message can remain in the Junk folder before it is automatically purged. The default is 30 days.
Trashed message lifetime - Number of days a message remains in the Trash folder before it is automatically purged. The default is 30 days.
Email message lifetime - Number of days a message can remain in any folder before it is automatically purged. The default is 0; email messages are not deleted.

How come that the Email Message Lifetime option didn't work even if i set the purging days value to 7 days or 2 days. Is there any way to set the purging days value lower than the default value of 30 days in zimbra?

This is an older thread; v5 includes a new purge process, if you're not on 5.0.3+ you may need to set:
zmprov ms server.domain.com zimbraMailPurgeSleepInterval 1m
