    Default Zimbra as email host.

I was wondering if the following config is not really something that I should do with Zimbra:

I was hoping to install use Zimbra as an optional web mail client for some of my customers. I would use the pop and smtp servers primarily to allow the clients to use Outlook or Thunderbird to do typical email. If they want the can have the option to use the web mail client.

What pop server does zimbra use? Are the mailboxes stored in the old spool format or are they stored in the maildir format?

Any other issues that I can run into? Any help would be great!!!

    Thanks

As part of a migration from a handbuilt qmail/vpopmail/courier/squirremail setup I've seen that work fine.

Currently for me some users continue to use Thunderbird via IMAP, the diehards use Outlook Express via IMAP (Outlook and Outlook Express have poor IMAP support so it takes some tweaking), although I'm sure POP would work fine as well. Many have used a Squirrelmail front end to the Zimbra server although now that there is a native html client I'm forcing them over to that (better junk mail control that way).

Mail is not stored in a spool but rather as individual raw text files on the file system.

Most users never noticed that the server providing their eMail changed from the old one to Zimbra until I showed them the web clients.

It seems like the mail messages are stored in the /opt/zimbra/store directory. Is that correct? Does zimbra manage internal indexing of these folders?

Since each email message is stored as an individual file on the file system, does that mean there are no pop locks like there are using other pop servers (Qpopper)?

Default POP and IMAP included free!

Zimbra provides both a POP and an IMAP server bult in! You don't need a second POP/IMAP server to serve the Zimbra mail...

That is my question. The pop server that comes with Zimbra, does it create pop locks?

No, I don't believe that it does.
