Question Cannot send and receive emails from Zimbra email server.

    Hello,
I installed Zimbra email server in my infrastructure which has a firewall and gateway installed on another server which has public IP and mail.example.com is pointing it to. We set up port number of the email server to xxxx and access email server using url mail.example.com:xxxx. Now when I tried sending email from an account on this email server to gmail id, it says undelivered mail status as below:

550-Please turn on SMTP Authentication in your mail client, or login to the
550-IMAP/POP3 server before sending your message.
<rDNS Addr>:35215 is not permitted to relay through this 550 server without authentication.

I seen https://productforums.google.com/for...ps/Fm9KK8qvi1E this post but I cannot add TXT record in DNS as advance domain control panel don't have such option. It has A record and CNAME record options only.

I neither can send email from gmail to email on server and don't even get any delivery status email or bounce email. What am I missing.

    Steps to Reproduce:
    1) Install two servers in a network A and B. Configure gateway and firewall on one of server (A) and allow incoming traffic and outgoing traffic from this server.
    2) Install Zimbra email server on another server (B) and made it to listen https on port xxxx.
    3) Now configure DNS to point its MX record at server (A).
    4) Test (B) server to send and receive emails.

If you can't add TXT records to your DNS then I'd suggest you find a better DNS hosting provider and you should never use CNAME records for a mail server as it may result in lost email - you should only use A & MX records for a mail server.

Thank you Bill for suggestion. I still have problem sending emails.

    What I did is:
    1) I have Windows 2008 server having company DNS server integrated with Active Directory, created a zone in forward look up zone.
    2) Added two A records, default one points to ISP DNS and another points to Zimbra server and Set it up as MX record.
    3) I can ping from internal network to get IP address of Zimbra server.
    4) Admin Console-> Home-> Configure-> Global Settings-> MTA-> Enabled DNS look up.

Problem again is to emails sending and receiving.
    Observations:
    1) When added all A records, it said "Warning PTR record cannot created probably referenced reverse look up zone cannot found".
    2) I can ping to example.com, Example Domain and m.example.com and get correct IP addresses.

Good. What you should also do is run all the commands in the 'Verify...' section of the Split DNS article to verify your configuration.

Yeah, I can receive emails from any external email domain now but getting a following response, any suggestion?

    <user@gmail.com>: host gmail.com[xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] said:
550-Please turn on SMTP Authentication in your mail client, or login to the
550-IMAP/POP3 server before sending your message. (host.domain.com)
550-[xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx]:57515 is not permitted to relay through this server
without 550 authentication. (in reply to RCPT TO command)

This is the same message you posted originally, it appears you're trying to relay mail through another server that requires authentication - is that what you're doing?
