If you connect to it on port 143 and check the capability it should show IDLE, it does on my system. It was in the last developers build which I had installed, I don't know if you still need to activate it but have a look at this thread

Just tried it and it worked! Thanks for the quick response. Now I have to figure out how to do calendar sync on treo.

You need to set-up Versamail to sync with Zimbra using the Exchange Server setting and it should work. The calendar sync is for the Network Edition, IIRC.
