    Question Ubuntu Package/Security Updates

    Hi There

I administer 2 relatively new installations for a customer on Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS with Zimbra 8.0.4_GA_5737 Network Edition.

There are package & security updates available for Ubuntu. I would like to install these updates (I'm not looking to update Zimbra itself at this point - simply the Ubuntu packages). I would obviously prefer to avoid breaking the Zimbra installation

Would an apt-get update followed by an apt-get upgrade and a reboot if required be safe?

Can anyone guide me in how I should proceed in this regard?

    Thanks
    R.

I would think that there should be no problem. I would, however, always recommend you do it in a test environment first and take suitable backups before you do the upgrade.

    Hiya

Unfortunately I had some problems post the apt-get update & upgrade followed by a reboot. Even though everything was apparently running:

    $ zmcontrol status
    Host x.x.x
    antispam Running
    antivirus Running
    convertd Running
    ldap Running
    logger Running
    mailbox Running
    memcached Running
    mta Running
    opendkim Running
    proxy Running
    snmp Running
    spell Running
    stats Running
    zmconfigd Running

The MTA wasn't. The zimbra web interface was running and showed no hints of this. I haven't been able to locate whining explaining the issue in zimbra.log - all I have are these:

    Tracking service mta
Oct 10 23:35:46 mail zmconfigd[1244]: Watchdog: service mta now available for watchdog.

Oct 10 23:36:00 mail postfix/postqueue[5446]: fatal: Queue report unavailable - mail system is down
Oct 10 23:36:30 mail postfix/postqueue[5862]: fatal: Queue report unavailable - mail system is down

Sending email from the web interface returned this:

mail error - An unknown error (mail.TRY_AGAIN) has occurred.mail error -method: [unknown]

Luckily I came across a somewhat similar post - and I fixed it by doing the following:

    Shut zimbra ie /etc/init.d/zimbra stop.

    Run /opt/zimbra/libexec/zmfixperms

Startup zimbra again, and this time around the MTA fired up.

Though I'd share this with others who pick up the same problem.

    Cheers
    R.
