Default Port 7071 is not accessable for some reason

We have installed ZCS 8.04 on a vps that is also running Plesk control panel. When I try to go to the admin console, we get this error message:

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at washington.telesouth1.com:7071.

The guys at our server support group say that Zimbra is conflicting with Plesk. I highly doubt this since Plesk does not use this port. Any thoughts?

    Thank you in advance.

If you are on the server, can you telnet to port 7071?

As I said: "If you are on the server"

Not "Can you telnet to the port from a remote server"

Please try again following my instructions.

    [root@washington ~]# telnet localhost 7071
    Trying ::1...
telnet: connect to address ::1: Connection refused
    Trying 127.0.0.1...
telnet: connect to address 127.0.0.1: Connection refused

No dice from inside the server as well. Very frustrating.

Ok, well, it definitely is not listening on 7071 then. So that's a start..

Please run as the zimbra user:

    Code:
    zmprov gs <fqdn of="" your="" host=""> | grep zimbraServiceEnabled
    and then also run:

    Code:
    zmcontrol status
and please post the output back here.

    Mark</fqdn>

If I understood your original post accurately this is a single Zimbra server, right? If so, then proxy should not be installed here.

Zimbra's proxy is intended to hide (often just) mailbox servers from end users, so that end users can navigate to one fqdn regardless of the fqdn of their mailbox server. For example, you have proxyfrontend.mydomain.com which has a public IP address and listens on the standard Zimbra ports, and mailbox1.mydomain.com, mailbox2.mydomain.com and mailbox3.mydomain.com.

In such a case, the proxy server listens on 80 and 443 for end users and transmits to/from the mailbox servers on different ports. That means that part of installing proxy in a Zimbra farm involves reconfiguring the ports used by the mailbox servers (or mailboxd service to be more accurate).

Since you have proxy and mailboxd on the same server, it looks like both are trying to use the same ports. (Postfix gets borked too for the same reason).

For a single Zimbra server best is not to install proxy. If you think you will expand later we have found it simpler to install a proxy server on the MTA/LDAP replica host and have a separate mailbox/logger/LDAP Master host right from the start. Much, much easier to expand later and with less service interruption to end users.

    Hope that helps,
    Mark
