Default Backup stopped on a mailbox and never got any further

Wondering what's the best way to diagnose the problem. I can contact support but I like to try and work things out before bothering them, at least then when I do I can give them portions of the correct log file.

Normal 4.0.5 NE install on RHEL4

did a zmbackup -f -a all to default location zimbra/backup

All went ok until it reached account 54 (around 430meg or so) then it just stopped. I gave it an hour, still nothing.... then another few hours, nothing... it just wasn't processing it.

Of course the box couldnt be accessed (maint mode I assume), I tried a backup abort... did nothing and zmbackupquery reported STILL on account 54 (and couldnt access account)

finally stopped/restarted zimbra itself and account could once again be accessed.

I guess I now have half a backup :/ and need to a) debug why it stopped on this account and b) run another backup (should I delete the failed one? or leave it to save time)

Are accounts connected with POPS or IMAPS? We had a problem with backups coming to a halt when an client was still connected with SSL. Activating the perdition imapproxy solved the problem.
