    Default Enable DNS Checkbox behavior

    Greetings:

I have finished setting up my Zimbra Server and all seems to work OK with the exception that I am unable to send emails to GMAIL accounts. I do get an error in the logs stating that the connection has timed out. If I Enable DNS Lookups in the Global Configuration (MTA) then I am able to send emails to GMAIL accounts but all my incoming emails are deferred. If I Uncheck the option then All my incoming emails are delivered but I am unable to send to GMAIL accounts. Very odd (at least for me). Sending to other accounts seems to work ok. Any suggestions on what I should look at here? Thanks!

This is a) in the wrong forum (I'll move it to the correct one) and b) been answered many times in the forums.

If you are behind a NAT router then you need a Split DNS configured, go to the wiki article on the subject and read-up on what's necessary. If you already have a Split DNS configured then post the output of all the commands in the 'Verify....' section of that article - you use those commands to check your DNS, hosts & resolv.conf files are configured correctly.
    Regards

Thanks Bill... Thanks for moving my post to the correct forum. I did see that the question has been answered many times but I wasn't certain if any of those responses really answered my question. I set the Zimbra Server up with a split-DNS according to the specifications of the Wiki article but I and getting no change in behavior.

    Greetings all:

I decided to give dnsmasq a shot and removed the bind9 configurations:

    My dnamasq.conf:
    Code:

    192.168.1.30 mailserver.arrowleaftech.com mailserver

There was nothing wrong with your BIND configuration. Is it only gmail that has a problem? What is the actual error that you're getting (also look in the log files)? You do need the DNS lookups enabled to deliver mail. You haven't mentioned which version and release of Zimbra is installed (I assume it's the current 8.0.4) nor which operating system, you should always give details and the output of this command:

    Code:
    zmcontrol -v
Are you actually behind a NAT router or just a firewall and have you disabled SElinux or AppArmor on your server?
    Regards

    Bill

    Thumbs up

    Hello Bill:
I was having a problem with gmail, yahoo and another non-public domain.
I am, indeed, sitting behind a NAT router running an Ubuntu 12.04 with Zimbra 8.0.4.
    Code:
    Release 8.0.4.GA.5737.UBUNTU12.64 UBUNTU12_64 FOSS edition.
I never went back into the configuration to turn the Enable DNS lookups on because I was not receiving my emails; however, I have found that after the dnsmasq configuration was installed and the Enable DNS lookups was checked the problem of not receiving my emails disappeared. Looks like you pointed me in the right direction (and I appreciate you making me do the research - I learned quite a bit). Thanks for your time and help. Cheers!

    Shawn
