Zimbra 8 using https by default but you can also modify it's setting to one of the following options : http, https, bith, mixed, redirect

    Code:
    su - zimbra
    zmtlsctl both
http - http only, the user would browse to http://zimbra.domain.com

https - https only, the user would browse to https://zimbra.domain.com http:// is denied.

both - A user can go to http:// or https:// and will keep that mode for their entire session.

mixed - If the user goes to http:// it will switch to https:// for the login only, then will revert to http:// for normal session traffic. If they browse to https:// then they will stay https://

redirect - Like mixed if the user goes to http:// it will switch to https:// but they will stay https:// for their entire session.

More info : CLI zmtlsctl to set Web Server Mode - Zimbra :: Wiki

    Hello.

IDK if the default settings have changed, but I suggest to ceheck out the docs for info about the webserver mode: CLI zmtlsctl to set Web Server Mode - Zimbra :: Wiki. I suggest using "mixed" or even better "redirect": your users won't have to change any bookmark but you will still provide them with a secure service.
    See ya,
    Mike

I seem to always get the certificate error with https, it is ok with Firefox and thunderbird access, but IE complains all the time so I just switched it back to http.

You got certificate error because using self-signed SSL certificate. Using commercial SSL certificate (some SSL certificate only a few $/year) will solved your problem on https error message (in case you would like to switch into redirect, both or https again ).

Thanks Masim, I understand that, but for as few people as we have I find it difficult to justify spending money on a cert.

Copy your CA cert from your Zimbra installation and install it as a root certificate in Internet Explorer. IE will quit complaining until it expires. Then recreate and install again.
