    Default stealthing zimbra so services don't display banners with versions

    I am able to change the SMTP banner:

    in /opt/zimbra/postfix/conf/main.cf, I changed:
    smtpd_banner = $myhostname ESMTP $mail_name

    I changed the Tomcat servername/number/build date so we don't give out that info, by editing
    ./org/apache/catalina/util/ServerInfo.properties
    in CATALINA_HOME/server/lib/catalina.jar

    But I can't figure out where to change the IMAP banner for connections on port 143. I'm using IMAP with SSL, but I don't think I'm using the Perdition IMAP proxy.

    To be clear, I'd like to change this:
    telnet server.domain.com 143...
    * OK server.domain.com Zimbra IMAP4rev1 service ready

    Any hints?

    Thanks,
    David Di Gioia

    Default Not supported at present...

    The Zimbra IMAP server's banner is currently not modifiable. Please file an enhancement request in bugzilla if you'd like to be able to override the default!

    Hey David, what did you use to modify: catalina.jar ?
    Or how did you mod it?

    Thanks

    Scotty

    Scotty,

    Sorry, I did not keep very good notes on what I did, but it is something like this.

    You need to do something like:

    su - zimbra
    mkdir tempdir; cd tempdir
    /opt/zimbra/java/bin/jar xvf /opt/zimbra/apache-tomcat-5.5.15/server/lib/catalina.jar

    then edit the file ./org/apache/catalina/util/ServerInfo.properties

    change these lines as you wish:

    server.info=Apache Tomcat/5.5.10
    server.number=5.5.10.0

    then jar it up again; jar command syntax is similar to tar command syntax; something like:

    make sure you get the paths and permissions right (should be user and group zimbra, I believe)

    cd tempdir
    /opt/zimbra/java/bin/jar cvf * /opt/zimbra/apache-tomcat-5.5.15/server/lib/catalina.jar

    Alternatively, I believe you can edit ServerInfo.properties and update it in the original jar file, by doing something like this:

    su - zimbra
    /opt/zimbra/java/bin/jar uf /opt/zimbra/apache-tomcat-5.5.15/server/lib/catalina.jar ServerInfo.properties

    I hope this helps you.

    Good luck,
    David
