    Default fatal: the Postfix mail system is not running

    Hello there,

    I am having this problem with my Zimbra installation: postfix is not running.
    When I do a portscan on the host, it does not list port 25 (pop3 and imap are listed, though).
    If I try telnet <host> 110, it says:

    +OK <hostname> Zimbra POP3 server ready

    If I try it on port 25, however, it doesn't say anything, just the black screen and when I press something and hit Enter, it goes out of telnet command (no error messages).

    Some other information:

    $ tail -100 /var/log/zimbra.log
    Feb 28 11:04:40 zimbra postfix/postfix-script[23335]: fatal: the Postfix mail system is not running
    Feb 28 11:04:40 zimbra zmconfigd[7148]: Executed: /opt/zimbra/bin/postfix reload norewrite returned 1 (14 - 13) (0.33 sec)
    Feb 28 11:04:40 zimbra zmconfigd[7148]: Failed to reload mta rc=1
    Feb 28 11:04:40 zimbra zmconfigd[7148]: controlProcess mta restart (-1)
    Feb 28 11:04:40 zimbra zmconfigd[7148]: CONTROL mta: bin/postfix reload norewrite
    Feb 28 11:04:40 zimbra zmconfigd[7148]: mta reload initiated from zmconfigd
    Feb 28 11:04:40 zimbra postfix/postfix-script[23376]: fatal: the Postfix mail system is not running

    $ zmcontrol status
    antispam Running
    antivirus Running
    ldap Running
    logger Running
    mailbox Running
    mta Running
    snmp Running
    spell Running
    stats Running
    zmconfigd Running

    If I send an email (from the webmail) to someone in the domain (ie from david@mydomain.com to david@mydomain.com), it works. If I try, however, to send, say someone@hotmail.com, it replies:

    An unknown error (mail.TRY_AGAIN) has occurred.
    method: [unknown]
    msg: try again: Unable to connect to the MTA
    code: mail.TRY_AGAIN
    detail: soap:Receiver
    trace: qtp1176245664-

    Looks like the postfix is not running. If I do $ postfix start, it doesn't return any error, but if I check zimbra.log, the results are the same as described above.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks in advance,

    David

    Zimbra version & release? New install or upgrade? Certificates expired?
    Regards

    Phoenix, thanks for the reply.

    I solved the problem. I have no idea what happened, but I did:
    $ zmcontrol stop
    and after everything stopped:
    $ zmcontrol start

    And it worked again. Scanned ports and everything was back to normal.

    Release 8.0.1.GA.5438.UBUNTU12.64 UBUNTU12_64 FOSS edition.
    New install, no certificates expired.

    Running 8.0.1 is suicidal. I don't recommend it.

    What? Seriously? You mean if I integrate my AD with this version of Zimbra, the AD database can get corrupted?
    Is there an official info about this? Which version do you recommend then?

    No, the OpenLDAP database that Zimbra ships with (zimbra-ldap). Its DB will corrupt. I would advise upgrading to 8.0.2 for now or you can see if you can make it until 8.0.3 is out, hopefully in the next week.

    I understand. Thanks for the information. Is there any documentation regarding the upgrade?

    Not sure exactly what you're asking for in regards to documentation. The upgrade process is already documented? https://bugzilla.zimbra.com/show_bug.cgi?id=80141 is the general bug used to track the OpenLDAP issue.
