Default Outlook Imap Slow other Clients Fast

I have a location which has been complaining about about the speed of Zimbra IMAP performance in Outlook. When deleting / moving a message it can often take 3-4 seconds per message. They have tested other e-mail services and they did not yield the same results. When a different client is used such as Thunderbird, or the Zimbra Client it is fast as lightning.

When looking through the mailbox.log I noticed the two different clients do things a bit differently and this is probably what's causing the issue. When deleting an e-mail via outlook, the log show the copy to the appropriate trash folder and then a Delete Message. However when the same task is done via Thunderbird, the logs just show a copy.

Here is an example in the logs of Outlook:
    Code:
    2012-12-28 12:12:52,263 INFO [ImapServer-836] [name=imaptest@airxcel.com;mid=260;ip=10.1.1.103;] mailop - Performing IMAP copy of Message (id=591): copyId=594, folderId=260, folderName=Test, parentId=-591.
    2012-12-28 12:12:52,265 INFO [ImapServer-836] [name=imaptest@airxcel.com;mid=260;ip=10.1.1.103;] mailop - Performing IMAP copy of Message (id=592): copyId=595, folderId=260, folderName=Test, parentId=-592.
    2012-12-28 12:12:53,552 INFO [ImapServer-836] [name=imaptest@airxcel.com;mid=260;ip=10.1.1.103;] mailop - Deleting Message (id=591).
    2012-12-28 12:12:53,554 INFO [ImapServer-836] [name=imaptest@airxcel.com;mid=260;ip=10.1.1.103;] mailop - Deleting Message (id=592).
And here is Thunder bird doing the same action:
    Code:
    2012-12-28 12:11:41,826 INFO [ImapServer-833] [name=imaptest@airxcel.com;mid=260;ip=10.1.1.103;ua=Thunderbird/17.0;] mailop - Performing IMAP copy of Message (id=578): copyId=581, folderId=260, folderName=Test, parentId=-578.
    2012-12-28 12:11:41,828 INFO [ImapServer-833] [name=imaptest@airxcel.com;mid=260;ip=10.1.1.103;ua=Thunderbird/17.0;] mailop - Performing IMAP copy of Message (id=579): copyId=582, folderId=260, folderName=Test, parentId=-579.
Any help would be much appreciated. The other location is trying to talk the Head Hanchos to switch to Exchange.

That's because Thunderbird doesn't actually delete a message, it just marks it for deletion, to get Thunderbird to delete messages you have to 'expunge' the folder.

Interesting! Wish outlook behaved like that.

I know there could be a lot of factors. But why do you think it would take outlook 2-3 seconds to delete one e-mail on a Zimbra server? When deleting 3 e-mails on the local network it takes ~4 seconds. The CPU and Mem usage is super low on the server (2x 4core Xeons 16 Gig of ram). This issue happens internally (Gigabit) as well as externally obviously. Other e-mail providers tested on the same machine / client perform fine. MySlow log is clean and no errors in the MYSQL and Zimbra logs.

Been search forums and logs for 3 days now and have not found anything that explains it or helps find the issue. So any help would be much appreciated and could end in Free Beer and High Fives if we ever meet.

    Status Update...

One of the last things I was going to try to fix this issue was running the upgrades on Zimbra. Well I was finally able to do that tonight. I first Upgraded to 7.2.2. Rebooted tested everything, and every thing was behaving exactly as before.

So next I upgrade to 8.0.2 and guess what!? EUREKA! It may not be as fast as some of the huge names out there, but it is now a more normal/acceptable level.

I have yet to have the Concerned Users" test this, but they should see the same results I am seeing.
