Default Migrating Centos 5 to Centos 6, Upgrading Zimbra 7 to Zimbra 8.

Getting my Zimbra NE Server (7.1.3_GA_3346) updated to Zimbra 8 seems to be a bit of work. I would just like to confirm that I do have it right, so please tell me if I am doing it right, or if there is a better way doing it.

    Questions: (I am running a 140user stand-alone server)
    1. Is CentOS 6 the best way to go? (I am running on CentOS 5)
    2. Should I consider the Appliance? (I am running on a ESXi Server)

Steps I think I need to go through to get to Zimbra 8: (Please correct me if I am wrong!)
    1. Create a new Centos 6 Server.
    2. Install Zimbra (7.1.3_GA_3346) and follow steps from Platform and OS Independent ZCS to ZCS Migration Using Rsync - Zimbra :: Wiki

Any help/ assistance would be greatly appreciated. I was hoping I could migrate to Centos and Zimbra 8 without having to install Zimbra 7...

    Kind regards

We recently migrated Zimbra 7.1.4 from CentOS5 to CentOS6 with the intent of going to Zimbra 8 in the near future. All the documentation I have read requires the same Zimbra version across hardware.

I had some problems with my migration and perl versions. What we ended up doing was a combination of the available documentation.

    In brief:
    1. do a fresh install of zimbra with the same settings/passwords as the OLD server (dnsmasq was used)
    2. remove /opt/zimbra/store, /opt/zimbra/index on the NEW server
    3. rsync /opt/zimbra/store and /opt/zimbra/index from OLD to NEW
    4. ldap backup and restore
    5. rsync again
    6. stop zimbra on OLD
    7. rsync again
    8. mysql dump from OLD, mysql restore on NEW after dropping all databases
    7. change IP addresses, remove dnsmasq
    8. done.

Total downtime was about 45 minutes

    Hope that helps,
    Moe

hI, i migrate zimbra to zimbra 7.2.2 centos 5.9 to centos 8 2 by following these steps:
    1) installed a vm centos 6
    2) installed on centos 6, zimbra 7.2.2
    3) stopped zimbra 7.2.2 on centos 5
    4) delete the / opt / zimbra on centos 6
    5) on centos 5 I moved to / opt (cd / opt) and I ran the command:
    * tar-zcvf - * | ssh vmcentos6.loc 'cd / opt / zimbra / && tar-zxf -'
    6) on centos 6 I installed zimbra 8.
    7) reboot zimbra8

All working perfectly! No: setting / mail / aliases / etc etc lost

    on 4) you deleted whole zimbra folder ( /opt/zimbra ) ?
does this means that you do not to have to install it in the 1st place?

yes, I deleted all the /opt/zimbra on the virtual machine centos 6

you have to install a clean copy of Zimbra on the Centos 6, because the sistem must see the RPM.

i see...i was just want to make sure because last time i did migration to same OS, i simply rsync /opt/zimbra/ from old (upgraded ZCS) to new server but this is different.

You were lucky not to have had serious problems, that has never been a recommended procedure.
