According to that output there is no MX record for the server and the hosts file is incorrect, have you checked the DNS MX record actuallu exists and the format of the hosts file against the Split DNS article?
    Regards

I fixed the hosts file, however I still get the output I did earlier with the host $(hostname). I followed the format so at this point I'm not sure what the issue would be. As it stands my mx record has a server fqdn of sieve-zimbra.sievenetworks.net with a server priority of 20.

    That's because it's doing a DNS check.

Please post the output of the fixed hosts file, just for confirmation.

Not according to your DNS records. Please post the exact dig command you used for the MX records.
    Regards

yeah you're right my mistake when I did the dig I did the server fqdn rather than just the domain name. Here's what I have now for both of those things.

    <<>> DiG 9.8.2rc1-RedHat-9.8.2-0.10.rc1.el6 <<>> sievenetworks.net mx

Let's start with the hosts file. The following line:

    Code:
    10.30.16.205 sieve-zimbra.sievenetworks.net zimbra
    should look like this:

    Code:
    10.30.16.205 sieve-zimbra.sievenetworks.net sieve-zimbra
Now to the server. What you have is two mail server in the same domain, is that correct? Will both mail servers stay in existence? Is this meant to be a migration from one system to Zimbra? Are you intending to move users to the Zimbra server or is it just a test system? Whichever one of those is your scenario you'll need a Split Domain if you intend to have the two mail servers operational at the same time.
    Regards

Okay thanks. Yes there are two mail servers in the same domain. I don't know if they both will continue to be used as of now this is just going to be used as a test. Thanks for the link though I'll follow that.
