Disabling logger

I've read somewhere here that I can try disabling the Logger to gain some performance. I just have couple question about the Logger server.

* what are the main functions of Logger ? is Logger responsible for sending me an email every night with stats ?
* if I disable it, it will also disable logger mysql database with all email stats, right ?

[added] I looked at MySQL database of logger. I really need the MTA table only.
